Wilbur A. Riegert—Ojibwa by birth—was fortunate as a young man to meet the then last keeper of the White Buffalo Calf Pipe, Lakota holy woman Mrs. Martha Bad Warrior. That spiritually profound meeting set a lifelong path for young Wilbur that would lead him to living most of his adult life with the Lakota at Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He would dedicate his life and resources to preserving the heritage of the legend of the White Buffalo Calf Maiden and her transforming gift to the world, the Sacred Calf Pipe.

“Quest for the Pipe of the Sioux” is one of Wilbur’s many expressions of devotion to fulfilling the purpose of the White Buffalo Calf Pipe—to bring Peace and Harmony to the People (Native America and the world). He began authoring “Quest” while he was Curator at the Wounded Knee Museum which housed artifacts from his family’s private collection of artifacts as well as those of their fellow Wounded Knee residents. The Museum told the heart wrenching story of the Massacre at Wounded Knee and shared the inspiring story of the Sioux and the message Mrs. Bad Warrior gave to Wilbur back in 1936.

The history and message of the Sacred Calf Pipe as told by Wilbur in his all his writing, is a profound and relevant message for today’s world.

Wilbur A. Riegert

As a Chippewa and as a Sioux by adoption as well as by ordeal, Mr. Riegert tries to bring forth in each Part, each “verse”, the crux of the way of love. He speaks in no mere display of words. It is his written dance of life, full of many experiences few men do or can share. He puts in words what might urge into motion hearts seeking truth, a vision, a life, a destiny. He tries to allow others to meet him where all men of peace know they must meet — in the truth. He invites us to a vision where truth in prayer meets love of God and neighbor, at the beginning of a New Day of Eternal Life. (Taken from the Introduction to Quest for the Pipe of the Sioux by Paul Manhart, S.J.)

What readers say about Quest for the Pipe of the Sioux

.

Thank you so very much, I have been attempting to learn more of my heritage, and this book promises to be an indispensable resource to many of my unanswered questions.

 Al Edwards

This book is fantastic…every Tetuwan Lakota-Dakota-Nakota of the original Seven Council Fires Council needs to have this book at home…it is essential reading for all native studies students, academia has suppressed this information for far too long over self-preservation & self-interests!

 Suzanne Dupree

I recently finished reading this book… This should be on every Lakota (Sioux) person's reading list and read in schools. What an amazing man Wilbur Riegert was and life he had. There is so much good history here that opened my eyes to understanding the origins and mystery of the Sacred Calf Pipe. Wilbur Riegert has preserved an important historical segment of the history of the Pipe and the Sioux people and it bears clues where the journey of the true pipe has gone since Martha Bad Warrior’s time.
